Taking the Dream Out of the Box – IPPC

This post continues my series on Taking the Dream Out of the Box. This time with IPPC – Intuition, Persistence, Passion and Courage. Creativity has many aspects and taking the dream out of the box may involve all of them – or just a few.

For example, you probably have a bit of intuition. You may not even realize it’s there. Intuition is that immediate knowing without going through an arduous process; a feeling that an idea will work even though it has little logical support. It just feels right. You may have to practice a bit to learn to follow your instincts, go with your hunches or trust your own insights.

Passion is another aspect that many artists consider key to necessary to accomplishing their creative goals. Passion is doing something for the sheer pleasure of doing it; it is intrinsic motivation. It’s doing something because you want to rather than because you have to. People with passion often get lost in their endeavors and may not even notice the passage of time. Some are so passionate about an idea they feel as if they have no choice but to pursue it and see where it leads.

“Passion is necessary to all creative endeavors.” ~ W. Eugene Smith

And passion breeds persistence. People with passion don’t give up very easily.

Taking an idea to fruition doesn’t come without a certain amount of struggle. Being relentless, determining they won’t be defeated, resolving that it won’t get the best of them – persistent people just won’t (or can’t) let go of an idea they believe in. Van Gogh persevered despite mental illness. Galileo was taken to court for his theory that the earth moved around the sun. Beethoven wrote his greatest compositions while deaf. Sticking with it no matter what will help you cultivate your success.

“You can walk up to people on the street and ask them if they want to be rich and 99% will tell you ‘sure, I want to be rich.’ but are they willing to do what it necessary to be successful? Not many are.” ~Arthur Rock

It also takes courage. A new idea or a dream is often met with resistance. It takes us out of our comfort zone. If you are the force behind the new idea, you may be considered a rebel. It’s risky. You could fail; you could lose, you could be wrong, but remember:

“Creative people are committed to risk.” ~Benny Golston

“Have the courage to follow your heart and intuition.” ~Steve Jobs

Perhaps it’s time we take our I, our two P’s, our C and our box and take a peek at the dream inside.

Yes, there is more – there’s always more; maybe not too much more. Same time next week?
