Cookie Optimism (with Sebastian)

I don’t know how it is for you, but this time of year I always want to bake some homemade cookies. In the past, I have always said to myself, “when I get time” and then I never have the time.

This year we are doing Christmas a little bit differently and ta-dah – Time!

Not that I am a huge baker or anything close, but I do have a few fabulous tasting cookie recipes. Some classic, some new. Mostly passed along through friends – thank you friends!

A few days ago I was reading this blog

and there was a mention of these cookies

cows_0

and a link to this blog with the recipe.

I might be a day late and a dollar short on this recipe but it’s new to me. The clincher for me was the molasses and the chocolate so I really wanted to give it a try.

Sebastian donned his (new) apron and got out his bowl, spoon and mixer. I donned my (new) apron (Thanks sis!), got out my bowl, spoon and mixer.

Together we followed the instructions to the letter. If I messed up the recipe, how would I ever know if it was the recipe or me? So I was very careful. Sebastian was very careful. We were both very careful.

Isn’t this a stitch?!  His oven mitts go all the way up to his shoulders!

Some people think these have too much of the spice flavor.  I don’t.  I like it.  In fact, if I make these again, I might use a darker, much darker chocolate and maybe less.  They are good right out of the oven but I could only eat one that way.  I like them better after they have cooled.  Sebastian thinks I am too conservative with my analysis.  He asked me, “Are they cookies?”  I answered, “Yes, they are.”  He replied, “Case closed!”  There you have an expert’s evaluation.

  1. Dear Sebastian, you are really quite an expert at cookies, aren't you? Does look like you've given your human companion a good piece (uh-hmm) of your mind (uh, I mean cookie!).

Dear Ginger, the cookies look so yummy! I think Sebastian is very lucky to have you initiate a cookie-baking session. BTW, where did you get Sebastian's baking equipment. Their sizes fit Sebastian to a T! Again, lucky Sebastian.

Have fun, and enjoy the cookies between you.

    1. Hi Val,

I don't know if I am an expert or not but I must tell you that I am making every effort to become one!

And I really try to tell it like it is most of the time. I think she understands. We're talking cookies after all, right?

Thank you Val for visiting me and have a Merry Christmas or Happy Holiday or lovely day of cookies.

      hugs,
      Sebastian

    2. Hi Val,

It would be an accomplishment to bake cookies without Sebastian finding out about it. He has quite a good sniffing-out-cookies nose.

The baking equipment that Sebastian was using came from a set that I found a few years ago. I believe it was really meant for 18" dolls but don't tell him. He thinks they are his.

They were sold as accessories and I thought they might work for bears. Lucky find I suppose. They don't sell the dolls or their accoutrements any more.

I might get one or two cookies as Sebastian is generous with everyone - three for him, one for me, three for a friend, three for him, etc.

      Thanks for stopping by!

  2. Hi Miss Ginger,

Are they ginger snap cookies? Mom makes them for Dad, they are his favorite. But the chocolate chips aren't in our recipe. Sounds yummy.

Sebastian, we love your shoulder pot holders, hey, you have to protect that fur.

Want to hear something funny? We call molasses "mole asses" (giggle). Well, that's the way it's pronounced, right?

Wilbur says it that way to and it makes him giggle. Guess we are just giggle faces.

Toby is sittin' on my shoulder reading this and now he wants to help bake cookies too. He is such a little copy bear. Giggle. (o:

    2. Hi Prudence,

You are too funny with your words. I like shoulder holders - it made me laugh. And well, what can I say about molasses...

      hugs,

    1. Hi Heather,

Sebastian did get a bit of a brush and fluff but no bath. I mean really what would be the point of giving him a bath before he gets flour and sugar and molasses all over him. (The apron is mainly to make him official. I don't think it did much good!)

Thanks for noticing! You're very sharp!

  6. Well of COURSE his mitts go up to his shoulders, with a tray that size his arms would all get burneded, silly! LT has been making us fudge and coconut ice and chocolate truffles, so excuse us, it's time for a snack...

    1. Hi Jack,

You are very keen and observant to realize how useful it is for a little bear to have oversized mitts. I still think they are quite funny. You should see the dance Sebastian did with them on. You'd be rolling on the floor. He's showing his serious side in these photos of course!

  8. Hey Sebastian,

Those look scrummy biscuits - I know you colonials call them cookies, and scones are biscuits and all that, but I just can't start with a foreign language at my age. I am disappointed though. Why did you put an apron on? It may look smart, but it stops the mix from getting in your fur, and how are you going to deal with middle of the night or any other time snack pangs? I mean if it's in your fur you can really suck it out and that's SO GOOD even if the flavours are a bit unexpected at times.

    Hugs,

    Jock,

PS really love those oven mits
